Washington, DC – Last week, at the annual Stair Week event in West Michigan, The National Coalition for Promoting Physical Activity (NCPPA) was pleased to recognize 23 area CEOs who have signed the Coalition’s CEO Pledge for Physical Activity, a national campaign with the goal of encouraging every CEO in the United States to recognize physical activity as an important driver of employee health and business performance.
“During the Stair Week leadership breakfast at the Grand Rapids Art Museum, we were thrilled to welcome a number of West Michigan CEOs who have signed NCPPA’s CEO Pledge” stated Joyce Lee, President of IndigoJLD and a champion of the CEO Pledge. Stair Week works to highlight the health, design and environmental benefits of taking the stairs. The idea is to get millions of office workers out of their chairs and moving.
The National Spokesperson for NCPPA’s CEO Pledge for Physical Activity, Jack Groppel, author of The Corporate Athlete, and cofounder of the Human Performance Institute, congratulated the West Michigan community for joining together to promote active lifestyle and wellness initiatives. “To change our country’s story around inactivity, we must start with America’s businesses. CEOs play a pivotal role – not just in influencing the workplace, but in shaping the community as well” said Groppel.
“Now is the time for leaders around the nation to follow West Michigan’s extraordinary example and help change our nation’s sedentary business culture,” added Scott Goudeseune, Board President of NCPPA and CEO of the American Council on Exercise. “NCPPA is calling on individuals and organizations from all areas of the country to become CEO Pledge champions in their communities.”
Leaders from over 200 companies have signed the CEO Pledge for Physical Activity, showing their commitment to workplace wellness in helping to reverse the nation’s obesity and chronic disease challenge. By signing the Pledge, these CEOs have made a public statement about their dedication to promoting physical activity and improving the health and wellness of themselves and their employees. The Pledge program also provides resources around evidence-based strategies for promoting a culture of physical activity within an organization.
