I’m writing to ask you to join an alliance of America’s CEOs, Presidents, Executive Directors, and Deans in signing the CEO Pledge for Physical Activity, and making a statement that we need to Get America Moving!  The CEO Pledge is sponsored by the non-profit, National Coalition for Promoting Physical Activity.

You already know the crises we face in our country with obesity, diabetes and inactivity. The U.S. Surgeon General recently stated that the most significant healthcare crisis we face in America is inactivity. And, the single most important thing we can do is become physically active. America’s business leaders can be catalysts in leading this effort. Dr. Jack Groppel, recently appointed to second term as National Spokesperson for the CEO Pledge for Physical Activity, announces the 250th signee on "Casual Fitness Day" at 2014 HERO Forum

Washington, DC – October 3, 2014 – The National Coalition for Promoting Physical Activity (NCPPA) today announced that Ana Dutra, CEO of the Executives’ Club of Chicago, is the 250th business leader to sign the CEO Pledge, a national campaign aimed at encouraging every CEO in the United States to recognize physical activity as an important driver of employee health and business performance.  In addition, NCPPA also appointed Jack Groppel, Ph.D., Co-Founder of the Johnson & Johnson Human Performance Institute, to a second consecutive term as national spokesperson for the CEO Pledge. Washington, DC – Last week, at the annual Stair Week event in West Michigan, The National Coalition for Promoting Physical Activity (NCPPA) was pleased to recognize 23 area CEOs who have signed the Coalition’s CEO Pledge for Physical Activity, a national campaign with the goal of encouraging every CEO in the United States to recognize physical activity as an important driver of employee health and business performance.

“During the Stair Week leadership breakfast at the Grand Rapids Art Museum, we were thrilled to welcome a number of West Michigan CEOs who have signed NCPPA’s CEO Pledge” stated Joyce Lee, President of IndigoJLD and a champion of the CEO Pledge. Stair Week works to highlight the health, design and environmental benefits of taking the stairs. The idea is to get millions of office workers out of their chairs and moving.

In 2010, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office reported that obesity accounted for nearly 20 percent of the increase in U.S. health care spending.  Annual health costs related to obesity in the U.S. are nearly $200 billion, roughly 21 percent of which ($42 billion) can be attributed to obesity, according to research released by the National Bureau of Economic Research.  

This unsustainable path has put the nation at an economic crossroads and awakened the healthcare system to the economic and moral value of prevention as the primary solution.
