Washington, DC – The National Coalition for Promoting Physical Activity (NCPPA) applauds Michelle Obama’s announcement yesterday of “Let’s Move! Active Schools,” a new public-private partnership to provide opportunities for student to get 60 minutes of physical activity before, during, and after school.
The new initiative is part of the First Lady’s larger public health effort to end childhood obesity, known as the “Let’s Move!” program. This new funding opportunity is a comprehensive program that provides resources and tools to empower school champions – P.E. teachers, classroom teachers, principals, administrators, and parents – to create active environments that enable students to participate in physical activity. The first lady is pushing to get 50,000 schools to join the new campaign over the next five years.
Several organizations across sectors are joining “Let’s Move! Active Schools” to kick off the effort: American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (AAHPERD); Alliance for a Healthier Generation; ChildObesity180; GENYOUth Foundation; Kaiser Permanente; NIKE, Inc.; Partnership for a Healthier America; President’s Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition; U.S. Department of Education; U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; Nike, Inc.; GENYOUth Foundation; ChildObesity180; Kaiser Permanente; and the General Mills Foundation.
Studies have shown that just 1 in 3 American children is physically active on a regular basis. According to the Centers for Disease Control, only 3.8 percent of U.S. elementary schools, 7.9 percent of U.S. middle schools, 2.1 percent of U.S. high schools provide daily physical education for students.
“With a growing number of alarming statistics about the poor health of our nation’s children, it is imperative that public and private organizations, federal and state governments, and local community leaders and parents work together to conquer a growing epidemic of inactivity in children which often leads to a sedentary adulthood,” said Scott Goudeseune, President of NCPPA. “NCPPA fully supports the Let’s Move! Active Schools program, which is a wonderful example of the critical public-private-community partnerships needed to help our youth.”
Registered Let’s Move! Active Schools will have an opportunity to access resources, tools, and technical assistance and training through this initiative. To register go to: www.letsmoveschools.org.
